Victims wished 'comfort' on abuse sentence

Young children abused by former Families SA childcare worker Shannon Grant McCoole were subject to the "most monstrous acts", Premier Jay Weatherill says.

As McCoole was jailed on Friday for 35 years for multiple child abuse and child pornography offences, the premier said his thoughts were with the young victims and their families.

The premier said he hoped the sentence provided them with "some measure of comfort".

As well as abusing young girls and boys, including some in his care, over a three-year period, McCoole, 33, was also the administrator of a global child pornography website.

In passing sentence District Court Judge Paul Rice said the case had no direct comparison.

"The nature and extent of the offending is depraved and sickening in the extreme," he said.

Mr Weatherill said much had been done within Families SA to prevent offending like McCoole's from happening again with staff now subject to psychological testing and full screening.

A review of current staff had also been completed and those people with questionable work histories had been "dispatched".

"But what we're talking about is human behaviour," the premier said.

"As much as we can do to protect the vulnerable, there will always be predators.

"We just have to make sure we put in place the systems to as far as possible protect those (vulnerable) people."
