Truck drivers targeted in SA crackdown

A 50-year-old truck driver from Western Australia has tested positive for methamphetamine while 21 major defects have been detected during a crackdown on heavy vehicles in South Australia.

SA police took part in Operation AUSTRANS on Tuesday, checking more than 500 trucks on the South Eastern Freeway at Monteith, east of Adelaide.

The WA driver was in charge of a B-double when he was stopped and an SA man was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.152 and also tested positive for methamphetamine and cannabis.

Police also issued 75 expiation notices.

Inspector Steve Kameniar, officer in charge of the Traffic Support Branch, warned truck drivers that Operation AUSTRANS would continue until June 13.

"Drivers who choose to speed, take drugs or drive a defective vehicle will be targeted by police so we can get them off the road before they cause harm," he said.

"We're also watching for any illegal activity by criminals using the heavy vehicle industry."
