June date for SA truckie over fatal crash

A truck driver, charged over a fatal crash in Adelaide in 2014, will answer the allegations next month.

Darren Michael Hicks came before Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the crash at the base of the South-Eastern Freeway.

The incident claimed the lives of Jacqueline Byrne, 41, and Thomas Speiss, 56, when a truck driven by Hicks and loaded with sewage ploughed into three cars stopped at traffic lights.

Defence counsel Mark Twiggs told the court the case was a "complicated matter" and discussions were continuing.

The circumstances of the crash prompted an immediate inquest with a coroner's recommendations prompting the state government to cut speed limits on the freeway for the descent into Adelaide, with trucks restricted to 60km/h and cars 90km/h.

Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal granted Hicks continuing bail to appear in court on June 15 to answer the charge.

He had been excused from appearing in person on Thursday.
