Total fire bans have been extended in parts of South Australia after the temperature in Adelaide approached 37C.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) has forecast severe fire danger on Wednesday in the northwest pastoral and Flinders districts.

A 24-hour total fire ban will apply in those districts from midnight on Tuesday.

The temperature climbed to 36.9C in Adelaide at 3pm (CST) on Tuesday.

Total fire bans will remain in place throughout Tuesday in the west coast, eastern Eyre Peninsula, lower Eyre Peninsula, mid north, Mount Lofty ranges, Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island districts.

The CFS says people in affected areas should implement bushfire survival plans and be prepared to leave before a fire starts.
