To dump or not to dump in SA

A LOOK AT SA'S NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP PLAN:

* The government conducted a royal commission into possibly expanding SA's role in the nuclear fuel cycle.

* The commission rejected enriching uranium or building nuclear power stations as unviable but said billions could be earned by establishing a high-level waste facility to take material from other countries.

* A citizens' jury of 350 randomly-selected South Australians rejected the idea with more than two thirds opposed to taking it further.

* A wider consultation program involving 50,000 people found 43 per cent were in support of the dump, with 37 per cent opposed and 20 per cent undecided.

* But the SA government says nothing further can happen until bipartisan support is restored, something Opposition Leader Steven Marshall has rejected.

* If bipartisan support is restored the issue could be put to a statewide referendum but that's likely to be several years away.
