Theft, robberies jump in SA

The number of thefts and robberies have increased in South Australia, prompting the state opposition to call for a reverse on police funding cuts made by the state government.

The latest police statistics reveal the number of overall thefts across the state increased by 16 per cent within 12 months, jumping from 47,802 reports in December 2018 to 55,588 in December 2019.

The number of aggravated robberies against a person also jumped by 26 per cent.

Opposition spokesperson Lee Odenwalder said the state government's funding cuts to SAPOL, Crime Stoppers and community safety programs - like CCTV and public lighting - must be reversed.

"The community is being put at risk by these constant challenges to community safety," Mr Odenwalder said.

"We're being told this year will be another horror budget.

"I hesitate to say what will happen to the SAPOL budget but I can't imagine it's going to get any better.

"You don't make the community safer by making cuts."

SA police minister Corey Wingard said he was 'sick' of the opposition questioning the work and dedication of police.

"Since coming into government we have spent close to $80 million on building the safety and security of South Australia," Mr Wingard said.

"I'm getting behind our police force and I've been pushing for and delivering more resources."
