Sparks from angle grinder used by government contractor blamed for ferocious grassfire

Construction on a water main has been determined as the cause of a bushfire that threatened homes in South Australia last week.

SA Water confirmed to 9NEWS today that its crew was responsible for the fire near Sampson Road on Wednesday.

“During work on a water main, sparks from an angle grinder in use by an SA Water contractor ignited grass beyond a cleared work area,” the statement read.

SA Water added that the contractor immediately contacted emergency services, prompting the Country Fire Service (CFS) to attend and contain the blaze.

Resident Emily McGuire’s home of 23 years came within metres of the fire, leaving her fearing for the worst.

“We packed up all the animals and everything … we were basically ready to go because we knew we were at quite a high risk.”

Ms McGuire recalled that her mother had noticed the fire on Wednesday afternoon, and went down to speak to SA Water workers.

“They said that it had started by accident. It wasn't under control and they needed help,” Ms McGuire said.

“They were very distressed. You could tell that they were very remorseful and panicked.”

No workers were injured and no property was damaged, and SA Water is now assisting SafeWork SA with their investigations.

SA Police have completed their investigations, fining the contractors for using an angle grinder during a fire danger season without appropriate clearance.
