Businesses flooded as storms hit SA

About 20 businesses have been flooded in Port Lincoln as heavy rain and storms hit South Australia.

Ninety thousand sandbags were made available across the state as it prepared for powerful storms that hit on Tuesday afternoon.

A shopping strip in Port Lincoln, on the Eyre Peninsula, is under a metre of water after a pump that usually keeps water off Liverpool Street failed under the heavy rain.

The SA State Emergency Service and fire services have had more than 100 calls for help after localised flooding and fires, which started due to lighting ahead of the storm front.

Adelaide was forecast to receive up to 15mm of rain on Tuesday night with another 50mm possible on Wednesday.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds, hailstones and thunderstorms was also issued on Tuesday for Eyre Peninsula and parts of SA's mid and far north.

The forecast rain comes after just 9mm fell in Adelaide during October.

The city also had it hottest October on record with an average maximum temperature of 27.1C, compared to the long-term average of just 21.3C.
