More than 8600 drivers snapped on SA phone detection cameras in first week
In the first week after South Australia's new phone detection cameras were officially turned on, more than 8600 drivers were photographed breaking the law.
Police revealed that between June 19 and June 25, more than 1200 drivers were snapped on their phones every day.
"It's really irresponsible behaviour. We are seeing people with their hands off the wheel, touching their phones, it's really reckless," a police spokesperson said.

Police said that in just one week, the cameras had detected as many drivers as police on the side of the road would see in an entire year.
"It is a staggering number of people that have been caught using their phones," they said.

For now, drivers will only receive warning letters, but if the $658 fines were being issued, the total for the first week alone would have been just over $5.6 million.
The cameras are in five fixed locations across Adelaide, on Port Wakefield Road, the North-South Motorway, Port Road, South Road and the Southern Expressway.
