Smouldering acid raises alarm in Snowtown

Firefighters are monitoring a potential chemical hazard in Snowtown, north of Adelaide, after being alerted to a smouldering drum of hydrochloric acid on a freight train.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) says it received reports just after 11am (CST) on Thursday that a 1000 litre drum of hydrochloric acid was smouldering as it was transported on a freight train.

A hazmat crew is at the scene at Railway Terrace but there has been no spillage to pose any significant threat, a CFS spokesman says.
