Slippery Adelaide pavers a traffic concern

First it was Hindley Street and now it's Victoria Square where pavers are causing slippery problems for Adelaide traffic.

The South Australian opposition says it's taken a number of calls from bus drivers concerned the recently laid pavers in the square are dangerous when wet.

The concerns follow similar issues on nearby Hindley Street where the city council was forced to apply a less slippery coating to make the pavers safe.

Opposition transport spokesman Corey Wingard says one bus recently had a near miss with a car, and the transport department needs to review whether or not buses should be driving through the square.

He says driving conditions on the pavers, where the speed limit has already been reduced to 25km/h, are only likely to worsen over the winter months.

"This is a very serious road safety issue and poses a risk to bus passengers and drivers, other vehicles and pedestrians alike," he said.

Earlier this year the Adelaide City Council lifted the speed limit on the Hindley St pavers from 10km/h to 30km/h after applying the non-slip coating.
