A man jailed for more than four years for child sex offences will now be detained indefinitely after being ruled incapable of controlling his sexual instincts.

The South Australian Supreme Court has granted an application from Attorney-General John Rau for Michael John Stevens to be detained until further order despite having completed his jail term.

In a judgment published online, Justice Anne Bampton said while she was concerned the application came very close to the time Stevens was to be released, she was satisfied with the medical evidence presented.
