A severe thunderstorm has caused widespread minor flooding, blackouts and damage to homes as it swept across Adelaide and parts of South Australia.

The storm hit mid-afternoon on Friday with the city's southern suburbs, the Adelaide Hills and parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula taking the brunt of the wild weather, including strong winds and heavy rain.

SA Power networks reported more than 20,000 properties were blacked out while the State Emergency Service said it took more than 100 calls for assistance, including some where homes had suffered significant water damage.

The Bureau of Meteorology said 35mm of rain fell in about 30 minutes and images posted on Twitter showed flooding on a number of major roads.

There were no reports of any injuries.
