SA woman to face trial on terror charge

An Adelaide woman has been ordered to stand trial on a charge of being a member of Islamic State.

The woman came before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday where she entered a not guilty plea to a charge of being a member of a known terrorist organisation.

Defence counsel Craig Caldicott argued the woman did not have a case to answer but the submissions were rejected by Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath.

Mr Caldicott had previously criticised the strength of the prosecution case and the length of time it had taken to collect evidence against his client.

The woman stands accused of being in contact with Islamic State over the internet and of pledging her allegiance to the leaders of the terror group.

Prosecutors said the woman, who was arrested in May, had been stopped at the airport by police in July last year as she was attempting to travel to Istanbul on a one-way ticket, and had her passport cancelled.

She was subsequently interviewed twice by police.

The 23-year-old will make her first appearance in the Supreme Court next month.
