SA train drivers vote to impose work bans

Adelaide train drivers will follow a four-hour strike with work bans in a continuing dispute over a pay and conditions claim.

About 200 members of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union met on Monday to consider ongoing industrial action in the long-running row over a new enterprise agreement.

State secretary Darren Phillips said some of the bans would start on Tuesday and were designed to hit the government rather than commuters.

The drivers walked off the job from 10am to 2pm on Monday, upset over the government's offer of an annual 2.5 per cent pay rise.

They are also concerned with the demand to strip a no forced redundancy clause from the new agreement.

The drivers have not had a pay rise since early in 2013 while the current agreement expired in December that year.

Mr Phillips said with negotiations now stretching over 18 months, Monday's meeting of drivers was understandably robust.

"There was a lot of emotion in there as you would expect," he said.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said the offer from the government remained in place and it would not budge on the no forced redundancies issue.

"We are removing that from all enterprise agreements across the public sector," he said.

But the minister said the government would talk with the union about what redundancy and redeployment provisions might be put in place in the future.

Monday's train strike follows similar industrial action by tram drivers on Friday.
