SA to shield workers from 'intimidation'

South Australia has proposed laws to shield subcontractors against "intimidation" when seeking repayments.

Small Business Commissioner John Chapman says there's evidence some subcontractors fear retribution when seeking fair and prompt payment for their work.

He's put forward a raft of proposals including penalties for intimidation and the development of a Building and Construction Industry Code to provide alternative dispute resolution.

"It is unacceptable that key participants in the industry are adopting heavy-handed tactics and as a result, I believe a firm legislative approach is required," Mr Chapman said on Friday.

Trade Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith said businesses had told him they risked missing out on future projects if they used the existing act to secure payment.

Mr Chapman's recommendations are open for public comment until August 19.
