SA thefts, robberies on the rise

LATEST SA POLICE CRIME STATISTICS

WHAT INCREASED?

* The number of overall thefts increased by 16 per cent, from 47,802 reports to 55,588.

* Car thefts rose by 24 per cent, from 3385 to 4189.

* There was a 13 per cent jump in thefts from a motor vehicle, from 9859 to 11,163.

* Shoplifting increased 19 per cent from 9774 to 11,674.

* The number of overall robberies rose from 563 to 659, a 17 per cent increase.

* Aggravated robberies against a person also jumped by 26 per cent, from 385 to 485.

* Overall fraud and deception offences rose by 15 per cent, jumping from 3,637 to 4,167.

* Trespassing jumped from 15,649 to 16,556, showing a six per cent increase.

WHAT DECREASED?

* Overall assaults showed a four per cent decline, dropping from 17,331 to 16,642.

* Homicide and murder dropped by 24 per cent, from 51 to 39.

* Assaults against police decreased from 830 to 625, showing a 25 per cent reduction.

* Sexual assaults overall also declined by two per cent, from 2,003 to 1,953.

* There was a 13 per cent decrease in threatening behaviour, from 850 to 743.
