SA school closed after $1m fire

A South Australian school will be closed for up to a week after a fire destroyed four of its buildings, causing a million dollars in damage.

Victor Harbour R-7 School has been closed by the Department for Education and Child Development as a precaution after the fire which has devastated the school community.

The cause of the fire, which started about 2am on Saturday and resulted in a million dollars in damage, is still being investigated.

Eight classrooms used by 200 students were destroyed in the blaze.

Infrastructure executive director Ross Treadwell said rebuilding would begin as soon as possible.

"Furniture and equipment will be provided so we can accommodate as many students as possible within other areas of the primary school, and the high school has offered temporary classrooms that are available as their year 12 students have now finished classes," he said.

The school will be closed for three to five days.
