SA power station demolition continues

Explosive charges have been used to bring down key sections of the Northern Power Station at Port Augusta as Flinders Power continues to progressively demolish the decommissioned coal-fired plant.

The charges were used on Saturday to bring down a coal conveyor system and two adjacent buildings with the blasts successfully weakening the structures so they fell in a controlled fashion.

"Staff and contractors remained off site while a small team of charge-felling experts controlled the activity," Flinders Power said in a statement.

The company said localised dust was visible immediately after the operation but dissipated quickly with low winds preventing any spread.

"The real-time dust monitors did not show any increased level of dust off site following the event," it said.

Police also enforced a land and sea exclusion zone around the plant during the morning.

The Northern Power Station, in South Australia's mid-north, began operations in 1985 and ceased production of electricity in May last year.
