SA police say extra officers a challenge

A new recruitment target for South Australian police will be a challenge but won't result in a drop in standards, the force says.

The state government recently approved an extra $4.1 million to employ 313 more officers by 2018.

Assistant Commissioner Bryan Fahy says police will streamline the recruitment process but will ensure standards do not drop.

"The target will be challenging, but we believe we will meet that target," Mr Fahy said.

"In essence the people we are looking for can think critically, problem solve, have a high level of integrity and have an appropriate level of fitness."

Police usually receive about 1000 applications each year and given the rate of attrition, need to start the 12 month training course in 2018 with 387 recruits.

Young people will be targeted, along with those referred by serving police officers.
