Senior SA police officer released on bail

A high-ranking South Australian police officer has been released on home detention bail after weeks in custody on charges related to a siege in Adelaide.

Chief Inspector Ashley Francis Gordon, 54, came before the Supreme Court on Wednesday where Justice Ann Vanstone overturned an order in the Adelaide Magistrates Court preventing his release.

Gordon was charged last month after an incident at suburban Blackwood during which prosecutors alleged he threatened to shoot police officers, blow up his house and take his own life.

Justice Vanstone imposed 22 conditions on Gordon's release including that he live at a property at Yorketown on the Yorke Peninsula.

He was also ordered to provide two guarantors.

During the bail application the court was told the case centred on the breakdown of Gordon's marriage and his subsequent mental health issues.

Defence counsel David Edwardson QC said after spending two weeks in a mental health facility and starting on medication his client's condition had improved.

The officer's ex-wife also supported his release on bail and Mr Edwardson said there was no evidence of him ever accessing a firearm of anything else to make good on the alleged threats he made.

In other words, "it's all words", Mr Edwardson said.
