SA pedophile has freedom bid blocked

Notorious Adelaide pedophile Colin Charles Humphrys has had his bid for freedom officially denied, nearly two years after a judge first approved his release.

Humphrys, 67, was detained indefinitely in 2009, but the South Australian Supreme Court allowed his release on strict conditions following an application in 2018.

That decision prompted a change in sentencing laws, which establishes a different test to be applied before repeat offenders are freed.

The changes essentially require an individual to prove they are willing and able to control their sexual instincts, rather than forcing the Crown to show they are unwilling or unable.

Two psychiatrists agreed Humphrys was unwilling and, if released, there was a high chance he would reoffend.

Justice David Lovell formally refused his application in the Supreme Court on Friday, reasoning that the safety of the community was paramount.

"I find that he has not satisfied the requirements," he said.

"Further, the reports and the Parole Board clearly state that he remains a high risk of reoffending."

The pedophile has served multiple jail terms for his extensive history of sexual offending, including the abduction and abuse of a boy in the 1990s and the sexual assault of a boy in a toilet block in 2003.
