SA passes permanent gun amnesty

A permanent gun amnesty will let South Australians surrender illegal guns without penalty as part of a complete rewrite of the state's firearm laws.

The bill, passed on Thursday and aimed at reducing the threat of gun violence, also includes a provision to prevent people with drug convictions from obtaining a firearm.

The permanent amnesty will pick up when the current one ends in mid-2016.

Commissioner for Victims' Rights Michael O'Connell says the victims of gun violence helped develop the new bill.
