SA parole laws to be reformed

South Australia has moved to reform the state's parole laws related to prisoners serving a life sentence.

Under the changes introduced to state parliament on Tuesday the attorney-general, the police commissioner and the commissioner for victims' rights will be allowed to oppose a Parole Board recommendation to release a life sentenced prisoner.

If a recommendation is opposed the matter will be decided by the newly created Parole Administrative Review Commissioner who will be a retired judge.

"This will mean the final decision will no longer rest with the governor in executive council and will completely depoliticise the process," Correctional Services Minister Tony Piccolo said.

However, the government will retain the right to declare some prisoners dangerous offenders to block their release.

"This means they will stay behind bars and not be eligible for parole even if their non-parole period expires," Mr Piccolo said.
