SA Murray irrigators to get more water

River Murray Irrigators in South Australia have had their water allocations increased despite the ongoing drought across much of eastern Australia.

Allocations for the current year have been set at 94 per cent of entitlements but will be reviewed again in two weeks.

SA's Department of Environment and Water says the level has been set following a 50 gigalitre improvement in water available to local irrigators, largely because of better inflows to the Hume and Dartmouth reservoirs.

But water storage controlled by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority remains about half the average levels for October at 41 per cent.

The department's Water Delivery Manager Jarrod Eaton said SA irrigators remained on track to get the full water allocations for the 2019/20 year but could face cuts the following year.

"Below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures are forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology over the next few months," he said.

"With current low levels of water in storage and low inflows likely over the rest of spring and into early summer, water availability remains likely to be limited heading into the 2020/21 water year."

The next allocation update will be released on November 15.
