SA Libs taunted over drug dealer laws

South Australia's attorney-general has challenged the Liberal opposition to "man up" and support a new crackdown on drug dealers.

John Rau has accused the opposition of trying to "neuter" a bill that would allow authorities to bankrupt drug dealers and confiscate their assets.

The legislation has been introduced to parliament four times but the Liberals have refused to pass it without amendments.

"It is time the Liberal opposition manned up," Mr Rau said on Wednesday.

"The government has taken this bill to parliament four times, only to be frustrated by the Liberals on every occasion.

"They use every excuse in the book but the fact remains that the Liberals are not prepared to tackle drug lords head on."

The opposition has called for the bill to be amended so proceeds from the seized assets are placed into a victims of crime fund.

Opposition spokeswoman Vickie Chapman has warned that the director of public prosecutions could face a conflict of interest if forced to act as a "debt collector" for the government.
