Accused SA bomb man blows kiss to court

An Adelaide man accused of bringing a homemade bomb and gun to a shopping centre has ended his latest court appearance by blowing a kiss.

Dennis William Childs, 39, was arrested outside Elizabeth Shopping Centre in October after a police search of his backpack allegedly uncovered the items.

The shopping centre was evacuated and the explosive device was immediately isolated near a loading bay, where bomb squad officers safely detonated it.

No one was directly threatened or injured during the incident and police ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Childs appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court by video link on Tuesday charged with endangering life and prosecutors said they were still waiting for more evidence from the bomb squad.

He was smiling for much of his short court appearance, blowing a kiss and waving to the camera at the end of the hearing.

The magistrate heard that Childs, from suburban Elizabeth Grove, was being detained under the Mental Health Act.

He is expected to answer the charge when he returns to court on March 17.
