SA man denies role in partner's death

An Adelaide man accused of harming his pregnant partner, who later died, denies hurting her and says her injuries were likely a result of her falling over drunk.

Alexander Alis Meyer, 53, faced court on Friday charged with intentionally causing harm to his partner, who was found dead inside a home in Millswood in June 2016.

Defence lawyer Anthony Allen said the woman had suffered injuries from drunken falls several times and she had a medical procedure cancelled shortly before her death because of alcohol.

Mr Allen said he had recently received a post-mortem report that found the fatal haemorrhage the woman suffered could have resulted from trauma from a fall.

"It is not possible to know how long that (injury) had been present," he told Adelaide Magistrates Court.

"The prosecution cannot identify when the charge occured."

He said Meyer had no case to answer given the post-mortem report, the lack of prosecution evidence and statements from various witnesses.

"There is insufficient evidence for this man to stand trial," Mr Allen said.

Meyer applied for bail based on these reason but Magistrate Brett Dixon denied it because of the seriousness of the allegations and the accused's poor criminal record.

"Taking all these factors into account, I can't be satisfied that Mr Meyer is trustworthy," the magistrate said.

Meyer will make a no case to answer submission when he returns to court on February 17.
