SA Libs push to outlaw patient snooping

South Australian Liberals want to outlaw snooping on patient records.

The legislation push comes after 13 health employees, including doctors and nurses, inappropriately accessed Cy Walsh's medical records after the stabbing death of his father last year.

Another six clinicians were disciplined and two were sacked for snooping on other patients.

It's already illegal to disclose personal information but opposition health spokesman Stephen Wade says patients need greater protections.

"If you are admitted to hospital, you have the right to have your personal information kept private," he said on Thursday.

SA Health said workers caught accessing patient records inappropriately in the future would be sacked.
