SA govt tries to calm uranium mining fears

The South Australian government has moved to allay lingering fears over uranium mining, as a royal commission that could increase the state's involvement in the nuclear industry continues.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis has launched a paper explaining how the industry works and the safeguards involved ahead of the SA Mining and Exploration Conference on Friday.

"It explains to the members of the public, in simple and easily accessible terms, how and where uranium is exported and safely transported to meet Australia's international obligations and supply low-carbon energy to the world," he said.

Findings from the royal commission into the nuclear fuel cycle - examining issues including uranium mining, the use of nuclear power and the disposal of nuclear waste - will be presented to the government next year.
