SA govt hosts community jobs teleforum

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill is inviting almost 50,000 people in Adelaide to a jobs teleconference as the state continues to haemorrhage in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors.

Residents from Adelaide's northern suburbs will be invited to participate in a talkback radio-style teleconference with the premier and Manufacturing Minister Kyam Maher on Tuesday night.

It will focus on the region's future as more than 1000 workers prepare to lose their jobs when car maker Holden closes its assembly plant in 2017.

It also comes after Alinta Energy announced plans to shut down its SA power stations and the Leigh Creek coal mine with the loss of several hundred jobs and after job cuts at BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam operations and at oil and gas company Santos.

Mr Maher says the teleconference will reach people who don't usually go to community meetings.

"The Tele Town Hall is a great was to hear first-hand from people in northern Adelaide about their views and issues," he said.

The government on Monday renewed calls for the commonwealth to release more funds to help the auto sector cope with the loss of local car manufacturing after figures revealed more than a dozen component suppliers would likely close.

Figures from the state's Automotive Transformation Taskforce showed that of the 74 companies most heavily reliant on automotive work, 58 were planning a future after the end of car production by Toyota and Holden in 2017.

Opposition leader Steven Marshall has called on the government to bring forward planned stamp duty concessions for business to help grow jobs.

"Do something right now to stimulate our economy ... we've lost thousands and thousands and thousands of full-time jobs here in South Australia just in the last six months. We're in a jobs freefall," Mr Marshall told reporters on Tuesday.
