SA bushfire victims can bury debris

Farmers and property owners hit by the deadly Pinery fire north of Adelaide in November will be allowed to bury waste and rubble on their own land, South Australia's environmental watchdog says.

Amid reports some farmers are being told they must send all waste and demolition material to landfill at a cost of thousands of dollars, the Environment Protection Authority says debris can be buried unless it contains hazardous material such as asbestos or chemicals.

"There has been some confusion over the disposal of waste material on private property, but this is permitted provided the waste does not include contaminants or products that may be harmful to the environment," EPA investigations manger Stephen Barry said.

The Pinery fire claimed two lives and destroyed close to 500 buildings as it burnt through more than 82,000 hectares of farming land.
