SA bushfire claims almost $25 million

Insurance losses from a bushfire that destroyed 27 homes in the Adelaide Hills have reached almost $25 million, and more claims are expected to be lodged.

The Insurance Council of Australia says 737 claims have been made by people affected by the Sampson Flat bushfire. Losses have reached an estimated $24.9 million.

ICA chief executive Rob Whelan said policyholders who had not submitted claims should contact their insurer as soon as possible.

More than $1.4 million has been donated to the State Emergency Relief Fund since the state government launched its bushfire relief appeal.

An emergency relief centre at Golden Grove will close permanently on Thursday, with the bushfire recovery effort to be based out of the Torrens Valley Community Centre in Gumeracha.

Authorities have confirmed almost 1000 farm animals perished in the fire, a smaller number than originally feared.

A Primary Industries and Regions SA spokesman said 933 animals, mostly sheep, died as a result of the blaze, including some which had to be euthanased after the fire.

It's not known how many wild animals died in the fire.
