Waste charges increasing in SA budget

The South Australian government will hike waste dumping charges in this week's state budget to raise an extra $64 million over the next four years.

It says the solid waste levy will rise in stages from $62 a tonne at present to $103 a tonne by 2019/20, costing households up to $7 a year if the high charges are passed on by councils.

Extra costs to businesses will peak at $44 in 2019/20.

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis, who will hand down the state budget on Thursday, says all the extra cash will be directed to waste, environmental and climate change programs.

He says the increases will also help boost business opportunities in waste recovery, which employs about 5000 people, and encourage more recycling, helping SA maintain its reputation as Australia's leading recycler.

"These reforms will see more businesses diverting waste from landfill into re-usable commodities," the treasurer said on Monday.
