SA backpacker accused met victims online

A man charged over a sex attack on two backpackers at a remote beach southeast of Adelaide met his alleged victims over the internet, it can now be revealed.

The Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday lifted a suppression order on details of how the 59-year-old met the backpackers, two women aged in their 20s.

It can now be revealed the women used the internet to seek a ride from Adelaide to Melbourne.

However, the court imposed new suppression orders on some aspects of the ongoing police investigation revealed by prosecutor Ian Press.

Mr Press said if necessary he could provide more information to the court but was inclined only to do so in a sealed envelope.

The alleged attack occurred at a remote campsite at Salt Creek in the Coorong National Park last week, about 200km southeast of Adelaide.

The man accused has been charged with a string of offences including unlawful sexual intercourse and attempted murder and will return to court in April.

The two women were injured with one suffering serious head trauma.
