Rain causes flooding in Adelaide

Heavy rain across Adelaide's southern suburbs has caused minor flooding with the State Emergency Service responding to more than 50 calls for help.

One of the worst hit areas on Tuesday was Hallett Cove, where a supermarket suffered minor damage and floods were reported at a local school.

Images posted on Twitter also showed water covering several roads and some homes where gardens had been inundated.

The Bureau of Meteorology said more than 20 millimetres of rain had fallen according to readings but it was possible falls were heavier in some areas.

The bureau also warned of the potential for more flooding later this week as another rain band sweeps across the state.

Adelaide could get up to 20mm from that system, with falls in the Adelaide Hills likely to be higher.

The State Emergency Service said Thursday's rain, combined with high tides, could cause issues for people in the Port Adelaide and Birkenhead areas, prompting it to make 3000 sandbags available to local residents.

As the rain fell across the Adelaide Hills on Tuesday a road crash at Chain of Ponds claimed the life of a woman when two cars collided.

Two men were taken to hospital in a critical condition while two children were also hospitalised with minor injuries.

The woman's death took the state's road toll to 44, compared to 45 at the same time last year.
