QLD-based company charged over ride death

A Queensland-based company is the second party to be charged over the death of an eight-year-old girl who was thrown from a ride at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2014.

Adelene Leong, on holiday from Malaysia, died after being flung 10 metres from the high-speed Airmaxx 360 ride.

C, J & Sons Amusement Pty Ltd, and its co-directors Jenny-Lee Sullivan and Clinton Watkins will appear in the SA Industrial Court on August 11 charged with safety failures including poor maintenance, inspection and staffing.

Safety inspection company Safe is Safe Ltd and its Queensland director Hamish Munro have also been charged over the girl's death.

They appeared in the Industrial Court earlier this month and planned to contest the work health and safety charges which were filed as a category 1 offence, the first such prosecution in SA.

The charges carry a maximum penalty for an individual of a $300,000 fine or a five-year jail sentence or both.

The Airmaxx 360 ride was making its first appearance at the Royal Adelaide Show when Adelene died and featured a rotating section with multiple arms that would spin, and move up and down.

It was shut down immediately after the incident.
