Police investigating after man becomes 'unresponsive' during arrest

Vision has emerged showing the moments after a man became "unresponsive" during an arrest in Adelaide as police say they are comfortable, so far in the investigation, that the officers involved acted appropriately.

The arrested man's partner has alleged that officers were "heavy-handed", throwing him to the ground and placing a knee on his neck, leading to his loss of consciousness. 

Police have stated they saw a man assaulting a woman and that he was violently resisting arrest.

Bradley Volraat witnessed the incident and filmed it. 

"It was chaotic, I was quite scared for the man, he didn't seem like he was OK, it definitely seemed like he was in a very bad state, that's for sure," he said. 

"When I came out, there were about five police officers on one man trying to restrain him while he was yelling and moving around a little bit and after about a couple of minutes the screaming stopped."

None of the officers involved have been stood down, but police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

"There is certainly a lot of evidence to be obtained, there is certainly the body worn video of all the officers involved, in addition to any CCTV to all the businesses or homes on Payneham Road," Acting Assistant Commissioner John DeCandia said.

"I can say that from that evidence I've looked at, from that body worn video, but it is only one portion, I'm comfortable, but that is only one police officer," he added.

The man's partner hasn't left his side at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She says he still can't breathe by himself and is in a critical condition.
