South Australia's giant panda Fu Ni celebrates ninth birthday

One of Adelaide Zoo's two giant pandas is turning nine and zoo officials are throwing her a party.

The celebrations for Fu Ni will be held today with special food treats and a card that visitors are encouraged to sign.

It will be the fifth birthday Fu Ni has had since arriving in Adelaide from China with her partner Wang Wang in 2009.

Wang Wang will turn 10 in just over a week.

Panda keeper Monika Lapka says Fu Ni has grown into a beautiful, mature female panda.

Fu Ni will certainly relish all the attention and show us her playful side as she rips into her birthday presents," the keeper said.

"She may have grown into a more mature panda over the last few years but thankfully her playful nature is a part of her personality that has not changed."
