A pilot and his female passenger who suffered multiple injuries when their light plane crashed in South Australia's north remain in hospital.

The pilot, 65, and his 64-year-old passenger, both from Western Australia, received head, chest and leg injuries when their aircraft flipped at William Creek airport just after 3pm on Sunday.

SA Police say the plane crashed as the man tried to land 165 kilometres east of Coober Pedy.
