South Australia's royal commission into nuclear energy is visiting the US and Canada as it continues to gather information on how countries are involved in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Commissioner Kevin Scarce will spend time with regulatory agencies, technical experts and private organisations to discuss their experience with nuclear activities.

"The series of visits planned will ensure the commission understands more broadly the way other countries are engaged with the nuclear fuel cycle, particularly those who already source domestic electricity from nuclear fuels," a commission spokesman said on Wednesday.

The trip will also allow Mr Scarce to inspect technology and programs that have no parallels in Australia.

"This will give a deeper and practical appreciation of the opportunities and risks relevant to considering whether South Australia should engage further in the nuclear fuel cycle," the spokesman said.

Mr Scarce visited Taiwan, Japan, Finland, Austria, France and Britain earlier this year, where he met more than 150 representatives from 40 international organisations.
