New 'revenge porn' law in SA

Jilted lovers who threaten to distribute "revenge porn" can now be jailed for up to two years or face a $10,000 fine under new laws coming into force in South Australia.

The new provisions take effect from Friday and make it an offence to threaten to distribute an indecent or invasive image of another person.

Attorney-General John Rau says revenge porn has become a worrying community issue.

"These changes strengthen the criminal law, creating a major deterrent and strong penalties to curtail this phenomenon," he said.

It also remains an offence to distribute an invasive image, with penalties of up to four years in jail or a $20,000 fine when the person depicted is under 17.
