Mr Ed won't do but Fred, Floyd or even Frances are in with a chance in the race to name the latest police horse in South Australia.

The force has launched a community campaign to get the public to submit names for the newest member of the mounted division.

The only catch is that his name has to begin with an F as the unnamed steed has a brother named Fortress and a sister named Fromelles.

All three horses are yearlings and have yet to be broken. They will need three years of training before they are considered patrol-ready.

If they make it they will join 38 horses already in service in South Australia and can expect to have a 20-year career in general patrols, crowd control and other duties.

Anyone who thinks they have a good name should go to the South Australian police news website for details on how to submit an entry.
