The South Australian budget this week will provide $5.7 million over four years to attract more overseas students.

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says the new Destination Adelaide campaign will boost South Australia's competitiveness in luring international students from key Asian markets while linking this with tourism and trade opportunities.

This investment is about accelerating the growth of our international education sector to drive the economy and job creation, Mr Koutsantonis said on Sunday.

Education is South Australia's fifth largest export, accounting for about 8000 local full-time jobs and is worth an estimated $972 million to the economy each year.

More than 30,000 international students are currently enrolled across the state.
