Acting Detective Superintendent Billy Thompson said it appeared Mr Bristow had been assaulted nearby and managed to walk to where he collapsed.

"I would envisage the assault occurred minutes before he was found," Supt Thompson told reporters.

Police said he'd suffered a puncture wound to his chest and it was believed his car had been stolen shortly before he was found at 5.45am.

Ongoing investigations into the incident led police to the Ford Falcon about 1.30pm on Thursday.

It had been reported as having been driven erratically through the area.

Police have called for anyone who saw the car between 5.45am and 1.20pm to come forward.
