A man remains at large after blowing up an ATM at an Adelaide shopping centre in the middle of the night.

Police say the man, who was on a motorbike, smashed through glass doors at Newton Village Shopping Centre and blew up the ATM inside.

Alarms were triggered and smoke was seen coming out of the mall after the explosion about 3.15am on Tuesday.

The suspect, who was wearing a helmet that covered his face, may have obtained cash from the machine before fleeing but it is not yet known how much.

The scooter thought to have been used has since been found in Paradise and police say it had been stolen from Magill last month.

Detective Chief Inspector Tina Buckley said while nobody in the incident it was "very concerning".

"They've caused a significant amount of damage to the ATM and the surrounding shops," she told reporters.

Police are investigating whether the incident is connected to other ATM robberies this year at the Adelaide Zoo and Tea Tree Plaza.
