Lucky escape for SA bushfire survivors

Wearing wet tea towels over their faces and armed with hoses, retirees Anne and Bevan Crook fought bravely through the night to stop their Kersbrook property going up in flames.

With a little help from neighbours and the benefits of meticulous planning, the only damage to their property was some damaged fencing and charred grass.

A dozen cattle in a nearby paddock were also unharmed.

Others were less fortunate. One house down the road was left gutted by the blaze. A car parked outside was reduced to a metal shell.

Exhausted but relieved, Anne, 67, and Bevan, 76, told AAP at their property on Wednesday they were lucky to escape unharmed.

"We put a lot of faith into that little creature over there," Keith said, gesturing to their two-stroke water pump.

"He went all day."

Stamping out spot fires and hosing down their well-maintained garden, the couple had their property well defended when the fire reached Kersbrook on Friday evening.

But when the blaze flared up from the opposite direction near the front of their house, their calm demeanour momentarily faded.

"We had it coming from three different directions at three different times," Anne said.

"At one stage, we got a bit worried, so we got the cat and got in the car. We drove to the gate and said, 'Where do we go now?'

"Bevan said, 'Look, I think I can contain this lot'."

With weary eyes and legs "like lumps of lead" after days on their feet, the couple were nonetheless in high spirits.

"We're patting ourselves on the back," a smiling Anne said.

"We count ourselves so fortunate. There's a lot of people much worse off than us."
