Police have failed to find a wanted man after heavily armed officers descended on a town in regional South Australia.

Tactical officers descended on Wallaroo about 1pm on Monday after they believed they had located a man they had been searching for.

Over the next several hours, streets were shutdown and residents warned to stay inside their homes.

Just after 9pm, police entered the home but their search failed to find anyone inside, South Australia Police said in a statement.

The hunt continues for the man, who is wanted for "serious offences".

Police have not named the man they expected to find at the house.

Some streets continue to be closed off and officers are patrolling the area.

The siege overnight comes only a few weeks after another manhunt saw police in the small town.
