Funding for the construction of charging stations would increase the uptake of electric cars, the Greens say.

The party has released a policy to fund 26 charging stations in South Australia and offer free registration to electric car owners for five years.

It says that should result in an extra 2400 electric vehicles on the state's road by 2021.

"South Australia should be at the forefront of the electric car revolution," Greens Leader Richard Di Natale said while campaigning in Adelaide on Saturday.

"The old dirty power sources like diesel and coal are on their way out and we need to support industries like electric vehicles to move toward a more innovative future."
