Fines for littering from cars start in SA

South Australians who throw litter from their cars now face fines of up to $500 or more.

The new laws come into force today, after being introduced three months ago, and mean South Australians can be fined $210 for general littering, while tossing a lit cigarette out of a car will attract a $500 fine.

Penalties can be even higher for hazardous waste and Environment Minister Ian Hunter says littering along highways and roads continues to be a major source of rubbish in South Australia.
